BRITAIN’S only reindeer herd were preparing for their busiest day of the year yesterday as Santa Claus made the final touches to his gift list.

The 160 animals at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, near Aviemore, will not be helping Santa Claus on his round-the-world trip from Lapland later today.

Instead hundreds of children from across Scotland are expected to descend on the wildlife centre on a Christmas Eve trip to see the famous reindeer.

Last night the reindeer herder Helen Robinson said: “It will be the busiest day of the year. Everyone wants to see Santa’s reindeers on Christmas Eve.”

Even yesterday families from as far afield as Kirkcaldy, Fife, had travelled to the centre just to see the animals that are so closely associated with the festive season.

It has been a busy couple of months for many of the animals, which have travelled across the country to take part in many popular Christmas parades.

Some of them will not even get a day off on Christmas Day, as six parade though towns in the district including Aviemore, Nethybridge and Kingussie as part of an annual showcase.
