Red Hot Chilli Pipers storm Oban
Nearly 7,000 revellers pack car park to watch fireworks

CLOSE to 7,000 revellers packed into Oban’s Tesco car park to see in 2009, with the iconic McCaig’s Tower providing a stunning backdrop to the midnight fireworks.
Headliners The Red Hot Chilli Pipers did not disappoint, after organisers of Oban’s Hogmanay Homecoming street party booked the sought-after act before any of Scotland’s major city events could secure them.
Ceilidh band Skerryvore, 80s rock outfit The Works, Oban High School Pipe Band and Oban Homecoming Gaelic Choir also put in excellent performances.
Local police praised the event, saying it was well organised and there was no trouble.
Speaking later, Sergeant Paul Burns at Oban police station said: “My understanding is that the street party went extremely well. It was extremely orderly and enjoyed by all.”
He said Oban officers dealt with a few minor incidents in the town, none of which were at the street party.
Event organiser Neil Mackay, a local councillor, said: “It was a major success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the almost 7,000 revellers who joined in the celebrations.
“There was an amazing buzz throughout the crowds with a really great family atmosphere. The event certainly reached the wow factor and we have been receiving positive feedback from those who came along.”
He said Oban community events team would be meeting in the next few weeks to discuss events for 2009, including the next Oban Hogmanay, and expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in making the event a success.
