Macduff-born chart-topper Sandi Thom is hoping that a trip to one of the world’s most influential music festivals will see her career flourish overseas in 2009.
The singer-songwriter – who proved a hit with crowds at Hogmanay celebrations in Aberdeen and Edinburgh – is gearing up to play the South by South-west festival in Texas this March. Known as SXSW, the annual event has become a renowned showcase for some of the world’s hottest new talents.
It has been responsible for boosting the Stateside careers of several British performers.
Writing in her online blog, Thom – whose debut single I wish I was a Punk Rocker was number one in the UK and Australia – said she was looking forward to the event.
“Everyone from Amy Winehouse to KT (Tunstall) has played there and it has had a really big effect on their career in the US,” she said.
Before then, she will be performing a series of gigs as part of a Homecoming tour of Scotland.
She will be at Dundee’s Caird Hall on January 31 and then Aberdeen’s Lemon Tree the following night.
On February 4-5, she will be playing her first full concerts in her home community, at Banff’s Fife Lodge Hotel.
