Shy men could sink Stonehaven musical
Call goes out for male actors as rehearsals begin for Oliver

A MUSICAL production is facing the axe if male actors are not found.
Music-lovers in Stonehaven are about to begin rehearsals for a new production of Oliver but say the show might not go on if the lead male parts are not filled.
A host of loveable and not-so-loveable characters, including Fagin, Mr Bumble, Mr Brownlow and Bill Sykes, are waiting to be brought to life.
Music teacher Mike Smith is one of the organisers.
“I do a lot of shows in Aberdeen and, even there, good men can be difficult to come by,” he said.
“Without men, there will be no show. As long as they can hold a tune and move a little, they can get involved.”
Chris Sturk, who runs Ma Simpsons Music Box at Stonehaven, said: “We chose Oliver because it’s popular at the moment. We thought it would be the one that everyone knows and understands what’s going on.
“We got a good response from the children and the ladies, but not from the men. We didn’t have any men turn up at all to auditions. It’s supposed to be a whole community thing. Anyone who wants to take part can get involved.
“We don’t want to disappoint the kids and, if we don’t get someone coming forward, that’s what is going to happen.”
Spaces are still available for the chorus – for anyone who is reluctant to take a leading role – including children and women.
