FOUR Scottish fishermen will be in San Diego, California next week to attend an annual seafood summit.

The quartet comprises Scottish Fishermen’s Federation president Ian Gatt; Mallaig and Northwest Fishermen's Association chairman John MacAlister; Alex Wiseman, of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen's Organisation and Jason Schofield, representing the fishing industry in Orkney.

They will be accompanied at the Seafood Choices Alliance Summit by Jess Sparks, technical and environmental manager at seafood industry body Seafood Scotland.

Fishing and seafood industry figures from all over the world will be in attendance during the four day event, which starts tomorrow.

Mr Sparks said: “As well as being informative, it offers an excellent opportunity for our industry to spread the message about the considerable efforts being made to ensure a sustainable future for our fisheries and coastal communities.”

The Scottish delegation will also take part in organised discussions with fishermen, retailers and processors on the US west coast.

Some 14 people representing UK fisheries and aquaculture will be attending the summit as a result of assistance from Sea Fish Industry Authority grants.
