PLANS are under way to celebrate the 75th anniversary of a popular north-east tourist attraction.

Stonehaven Open Air Pool has attracted visitors from across the country since it was opened on June 4, 1934.

The friends of the pool group are appealing for memorabilia dating back through the decades to help put together a commemorative DVD.

Former visitors and staff are being sought to add their experiences and memories to the upcoming events.

Information, photographs and other items will be put on display at special exhibitions later in the year.

The volunteers are also hoping to hold a weekend of celebrations in July.

The unique outdoor pool has been visited by up to 65,000 swimmers a year in its heyday and was rescued from the brink of closure in 1994 with the formation of the friends group.

Member David Dobbie said: “We are absolutely delighted. It is 75 years and we are keen to go for another 75.

“We want to put the pool on a firm foundation so it can continue. It is a unique asset and we must keep it strong for the 21st century.”

Ongoing work to instal a paddling pool on the site is 75% complete, according to Mr Dobbie.

It is on schedule to be ready for the opening of the pool on May 30.

The 2008 season was closed in September at a special event featuring Olympic swimmer David Carry.

Anyone with memorabilia can contact the group on 75years@stonehaven openairpool.co.uk
