Hair-raising event in Perth boosts coffers

SHOPPERS at the St John’s Centre in Perth were yesterday given a hair-raising experience for Comic Relief.

Top Scottish hairdresser Charlie Taylor, who is based in the city, was on hand during the morning to create some crazy styles in return for a donation to the charity.

Unsurprisingly, the most popular colouring chosen by her customers was red to tie in with the red nose theme.

The day was part of a week of fundraising in which the centre staff hoped to raise £2,500.

Activities throughout the week have included a silent auction for a carved golden eagle, created by champion chainsaw carver Pete Bowsher, and two Caterham 7 sports cars filled with red balls.

For a £1 donation the public could guess the number of balls contained in both cars, with a driving experience as the prize for the winner.

Although the money has yet to be counted, the staff raised more than £1,000 at their launch last weekend and a spokeswoman said they were confident of hitting their target.

“People have been very generous with their money and it’s been manic,” she said. “I’d say it’s very safe to assume we’ve hit our target and I’m sure we’ve even exceeded it.”
