Marykirk raft race set to sail back following four-year break
teams will compete on river North Esk to laurencekirk
Published:
THE Marykirk raft race is to return in May after a four-year break.
Up to 30 teams of rafters will race the one-and-a-half miles down the River North Esk to the village, near Laurencekirk, on May 24.
The race is to be started by Celtic legend Tommy Gemmel.
The first Marykirk raft race was held in 1994 and has been missing from the local calendar for four years as the committee struggled to find new members.
At the finish line, on the village green, the day will be packed full of events with various stall-holders and food vendors on hand. There will also be a pet show, dance routines, contests and a battle of the bands.
Rafting teams can consist of as little as two members or as many as 15 and rafts must be homemade and man or woman-powered.
Funds raised on the day will be divided between Chas (Children's Hospice Association Scotland) and local clubs and groups.
