ORKNEY ultra-distance runner William Sichel believes he is prepared to break Scotland’s oldest athletic record next month.

The 55-year-old is set to travel to Greece, where he will attempt to run for more than 567 miles in the Athens international ultra-marathon festival seven day race, starting on Friday, April 3.

The current record was set by Edinburgh-born George Cameron in New York in 1882.

In his first attempt, Sichel fell just short, covering 532.6 miles in Hamm, Germany, last June.

Sichel will join 30 starters from 10 countries at the Hellikin Olympic complex south of Athens for his record-breaking attempt next week.

He said: “I have had a good build up to this event and I am really looking forward to having another shot at this amazing record.

“I will need some luck with the weather conditions, but I am prepared for everything.”
