New head of crime is hopeful of solving murder mystery

Ralph Noble says Alistair Wilson case ‘still live’

NORTHERN Constabulary’s new head of crime says he is “still hopeful” that the murderer of Nairn banker Alistair Wilson will be brought to justice.

Detective Superintendent Ralph Noble said the search for the gunman was still “a live incident” and that the case would be reviewed if and when new evidence arose.

Mr Wilson, a Bank of Scotland manager, and his wife Veronica had been putting their two young children to bed on November 28, 2004, when the 30-year-old father was called to the door of their home in Crescent Road, Nairn. He was shot three times.

Speaking to the Press and Journal yesterday, Mr Noble, who has succeeded Detective Superintendent Gordon Urquhart, said: “The case will be reviewed on the basis of fresh information.

“The case is very much still open, and I am still hopeful that a conclusion will be obtained.”

At the height of the investigation – the biggest manhunt mounted in the Highlands – 40 police officers worked on the case, but no one has been charged.

Last year, the force’s chief constable, Ian Latimer, said he hoped developments in forensic science would enable evidence found at the scene to be re-examined.
