THE travels of an Aberdeen university graduate will form the basis of a new exhibition.
Steven MacIver has just completed a journey from Rome, through Spain, Portugal, America, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Turkey and back to Rome, where he was researching sports grounds.
The 29-year-old Gray’s School of Art graduate set off on his travels to explore the notion of the home ground and its relationship with the community. He said he aims to prove that the devotion to a sports team and a patch of land can be used as a universal language.
His journey fuelled his passion for capturing sports grounds and his belief that they have a direct link to the spirit and identity of the community. He said: “The Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing has become iconic.
“Its unique design and sheer scale exceeded my expectations. A day spent photographing the Beijing National Stadium emphasized to me the importance of being on-site and interacting with the subject.
“This experience is already proving invaluable now I’m back in the studio.”
Mr MacIver was born and raised in Orkney but moved to Aberdeen to study art, graduating from the Robert Gordon University school in 2002 with a first class honours degree.
His new exhibition will be showcased in Aberdeen later this year, in conjunction with the opening of the new Aberdeen Sports Village in August. Dates and venue are still to be confirmed.
