Get top writing tips at Dundee festival

Tuition on offer from experts

Published:

BUDDING writers will receive expert advice to help them hone their skills at this year’s Dundee Literary Festival.

A weekend of workshops has been organised as part of the event, which is being organised by Dundee University later this month.

The programme will cover topics such as style and language, and will offer tips on how to get work published.

The first session at 9am on Friday, June 26, will deal with writing fiction for magazines. The following day at 9am Jim Stewart and Rachel Marsh will give tuition in creative writing.

Ms Marsh edits the New Writing Dundee anthology and has taught creative writing for 10 years. She is currently finishing her first novel.

Dr Stewart is a poet whose work has featured in many poetry collections. He has taught in Dundee University’s English department for more than 20 years.

A session at 3.30pm on Saturday, June 27, will consider ways for writers to get their books published. The gathering will involve influential figures in publishing, who will give an insight into the industry and take questions from the audience.

The focus will shift to writing for graphic novels as part of the festival’s Comics Day, which takes place on June 28. Festival director Anna Day said workshops were hugely important to the festival.

All events will take place at the university’s Dalhousie building at Old Hawkhill. For the full programme visit www.literarydundee.co.uk.
