Pranksters have struck at a busy Inverness roundabout, sending visitors looking for a popular Highland landmark on a wildgoose chase.

Four signs at the Essich roundabout on the Trunk Link Road were turned around to point in the wrong directions.

A sign for the cycle path for Loch Ness was pointing towards the town centre, while an adjacent sign for Dores, on Loch Ness, and Holm pointed in the direction of Inshes and Raigmore Hospital.

Other signs for Torbreck and Essich, and Lochardil were also pointing in the wrong directions.

Residents in the area said they had not noticed the switch, but one man suggested that RockNess revellers may be responsible for the prank.

Another likened the alterations to World War II, when the authorities removed signs to prevent German soldiers from navigating their way round the country if they invaded.

Holm Community Council chairman Steve Rodger said: “I drove past there twice today and did not notice this. But it could be very confusing for visitors.”

Mr Rodger said he contacted the council to correct the signs after being alerted to the situation by the Press and Journal.
