The closing date for entries for the Williamson Foodservice Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards is looming.

Businesses and individuals involved in the industry across the north have to act now before the deadline of Monday, July 20.

The food and drink industry in the Highlands and Islands generates annual sales of £1billion-plus and supports more than 30,000 full-time-equivalent jobs across the region.

There is a diverse range of products including fish, shellfish, meat, preserves, dairy, biscuits and confectionery.

The awards are organised by the Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Forum and supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scotland Food and Drink.

Some 11 categories recognise high standards and quality across the industry, and include the restaurant of the year award supported by the Press and Journal.

Others are: best use of local food and drink; partnerships for success; environment; healthier food and drink; innovation; new product; people development through skills; distance no object; new business; and young ambassador. Forum chairwoman Hazel Gordon said: “As well as encouraging good practice in the industry, the awards are a great way for businesses to raise their profile.

“As previous winners will testify, winning an award is a great way to draw attention to and extend the market for your business.”

Gary Williamson, managing director of title sponsor Williamson Foodservice, said: “It’s been good to see a healthy response from businesses and organisations across the area for this year’s awards. I’d encourage all businesses across the Highlands and Islands to enter.

“This industry endorsement for your business or product is a great boost for staff morale and an excellent way to enhance your marketing campaigns too.”

The Storehouse, at Foulis Ferry, Evanton, Ross-shire, won last year’s best use of local food award. Director Michelle Stevens said: “Winning the award was a fantastic boost for our staff and recognised all the hard work involved with dealing with multiple local producers rather than bulk buying from one large organisation.

“The award has also highlighted our commitment to local producers, which has allowed us to expand our stock considerably over the last year.”

One of the world’s greatest chefs, Albert Roux, is to be guest speaker at the award presentation dinner in the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness, on Friday, October 23.
