Aberdeen Airport is expecting its busiest day of the year so far today as the summer holiday season officially begins.

The airport estimates more than 11,000 passengers will pass through the Dyce terminal today, as schools in the north-east close for the summer break.

Over the weekend more than 35,000 holidaymakers are expected, but it is thought numbers could be slightly down from last year, as many continue to feel the effects of the recession.

Airport managing director Kevin Brown said: “We are looking forward to the start of the summer season. With thousands of people passing through this weekend alone, we expect this will be our busiest of the year so far.

“Passengers who have not travelled through the terminal since last year’s holiday are in for a big surprise, with major improvements having taken place over the last 12 months, and further investment still going on.

“Not only have we just begun transforming international arrivals and departures but we also have new cafes and bars. We are celebrating our 75th anniversary this month, and investing heavily this year.”

High numbers of visitors are set to pass through the airport to spend their holidays in the north-east. Visit-Scotland’s regional director for Grampian Ken Massie said: “Research shows that direct access to a destination has a huge impact on where people decide to take a holiday and Aberdeen continues to attract new international and domestic routes and increasing numbers of flights.

“There are local events including the Aboyne Highland Games and the Gordon Highlanders International Beating Retreat which is attracting visitors from Canada and South Africa.

“With a favourable exchange rate for overseas visitors combined with other indicators, this suggests the potential for strong inbound tourism in the north-east over the coming months.”

Passengers are also being advised to take note of the security restrictions.

George Cowie, airport security manager, said: “If people pay attention to the security measures, it will make their journey through the airport quicker and easier.

“The restrictions do not just apply to bottles of water either. Everything from toothpaste to sun cream and from perfume to deodorant are included and need to be packed into hold luggage and not taken in hand luggage.”

Business is also expected to increase across airports such as Inverness and Dundee as holidaymakers fly abroad or to other UK destinations.

Holidaymakers are being warned to keep their homes safe while they are away.

Constable Jim Watson from Grampian Police’s crime reduction unit said: “There are some basic things you should remember to do when you go on holiday. Obviously, ensure that you securely lock all windows and doors. If you have an alarm installed make sure it is set correctly.”
