DRIVERS in the north-east are being warned not to drink and drive as Grampian Police launch their summer clamp- down today.

The Summer Safety Drink/Drug Drive campaign will run for the next two weeks and will see more officers on patrol.

The campaign is run by Road Safety Grampian, a partnership between Grampian Police and Grampian Fire and Rescue in conjunction with the charity Crimestoppers and Alcohol Support Limited.

Head of roads policing Chief Inspector Ian Wallace said: “Our message is very clear this year, drink and drive and you risk losing your life and your driving licence.

“There is always the temptation on a nice sunny day to have one or two drinks while you’re at a family barbecue, or in the beer garden with your friends.

“The reality of doing that is you are risking the freedom that driving gives you when you are caught drink-driving.

“I am asking anyone using their vehicle this summer simply to think before they drink.

“Throughout this campaign we will be deploying additional resources in all areas of the force to deter and detect offenders.

“You will be breathalysed for committing any moving road traffic offence, whether that’s exceeding the speed limit, failing to wear a seatbelt or driving your vehicle with a defective light.”

Grampian Fire and Rescue station manager Willie Tocher, who works with Roads Safety Grampian, said: “Our personnel deal with numerous serious road collisions, often where the driver is under the influence of alcohol.

“During the summer holiday period remember that if you get into the driver’s seat after drinking alcohol you are putting your own and many other peoples lives at risk.”
