Ross County defender Steven Watt is confident the Dingwall men will thrive in the First Division – despite the expected onslaught from big-spending Dundee.

Watt, 24, said: “The squad we have has been cut down compared to the one we had last season but I don’t see any difference really.

“I think we have a great chance of finishing much higher up in the league this season and credit to the manager as he has done really well with the signings he has made.

“Spending a lot of money like Dundee have – although they have bought great players – does not always work.

“How many strikers do they have? Six or seven? You cannot play all of them.

“There will be unrest there throughout the season and I don’t imagine players will be happy if they are not playing.

“I think we did well in the marketplace and we will be quite happy to be under the radar.”

Watt and his Staggies team-mates travel to Station Park to play Nairn County today after defeating both Huntly and Forres Mechanics in their first two pre-season fixtures.

Staggies manager Derek Adams will again rotate his squad but forward Paul Di Giacomo (ankle) and midfielder Iain Vigurs (knee) are expected to miss the game through injury.

Adams said: “Over the coming weeks we will see the best players coming to the fore and the ones who are going to stake their claim.

“Just now it is about switching players about and giving them game time – there is no set pattern to the team we are playing just now. I have in my own mind what team I am going to play when the season starts but suspensions and injuries will come into that.”

Elgin City make the short journey to Lossiemouth to play in a friendly which will act as a fundraiser for a new stand at Grant Park.

Lossiemouth secretary Alan McIntosh said: “We need £16,000 to build our new stand and hopefully we will get a big crowd for the derby game against Elgin, which will reduce the target even further.”

Peterhead will be without Bobby Mann and Callum MacDonald for their trip to Huntly, while Highland League champions Cove Rangers will face an Aberdeen under-19s team at Allan Park.

Inverurie Locos play host to Second Division Brechin City at Harlaw Park, while Dick Campbell’s Forfar side face Forres at Mosset Park.

In other friendlies, Second Division Arbroath welcome East of Scotland League champions Spartans to Gayfield Park. Stirling Albion play First Division Partick Thistle at Forthbank and Stenhousemuir play host to Berwick Rangers at Ochilview.
