2,000-tonne load of barytes minerals is potentially the biggest to leave the fair city

Massive cargo shipped from Perth harbour

One of the biggest cargoes yet shipped from Perth harbour left the Fair City at high tide yesterday.

Oil firm M-I Swaco is shipping 2,000 tonnes of barytes minerals from Perth to Great Yarmouth. The Sea Kestrel arrived in Perth on Wednesday carrying a cargo of 2,000 tonnes of wheat from Kings Lynn in Norfolk.

Stevedores from Morris Young discharged the cargo from the vessel, before loading the minerals in time for high water at about 5pm yesterday. A spokesman for Perth harbour said the load is potentially the biggest shipment yet to leave the harbour.

“This is the second large shipment of barytes by M-I Swaco from Perth this year, following a load of 1,800 tonnes that was shipped in March,” he said.

“The company has for many years mined barytes in Highland Perthshire and ships them south to its mill in Great Yarmouth. It has used Aberdeen as a port for years, but is now turning to Perth as it provides an efficient, environmentally-friendly and economic means of shipping their materials. The shipment means that around 70 return lorry trips will be taken off the UK’s road system.”
