Masterful performance by Aberdeen’s Mahady at championships in Finland

ABERDEEN’S Laura Mahady romped to victory in the over-55 women's 800 metres in the world masters track and field championships at Lahti, Finland, yesterday.

The Scottish champion notched in a British masters age-group record of 2min 19.50sec. German Annette Koop was second in 2:23.11 with Australia's Cristine Penn third in 2:26.62.

Alastair Dunlop (Stornoway) picked up a bronze medal in the over-55 men's 800m. Canada's Francois Martel took the gold in 2:09.17 from Puerto Rico's Jorge Ortiz Rivera (2:09.58).

James MacPhail (Inverness Harriers) played a part in helping Scotland win the combined under-18 and under-16 boys' team trophy in the Celtic nations junior athletics international at Carmarthen on Saturday.

The Scottish schools champion knocked more than one second off his best time when winning the 400m hurdles in 54.5. MacPhail also helped Scotland set a Celtic nations meeting record of 3:17.89 in the 4x400m relay.

Guy Learmouth (Lasswade), Stuart Ross (Glasgow) and Anthony Young (Pitreavie) were the other members of the record-breaking quartet.

MacPhail's clubmate Craig Cameron won the under-16 boys' long jump with a personal best of 6.21m. There was disappointment for Inverness athlete Stuart Laing, who saw his team fail to complete the 4x400m relay in the under-18's match.

Gemma Cormack (Moray Road Runners) added to Scotland's successes when she won the under-18 girls' 1,500m in 4:42.79.

Ellie Workman (Banchory Stonnehaven AC) was second in high jump (1.65m) and helped Scotland finish third in 4x100m relay.

Shetland's Jordan Morrison was second in the javelin with a throw of 47.50m while Eleanor Briggs (Inverness Harriers) was seventh in an invitation under-18 women's 100m, clocking 13.09.

The top Scots performance came from Falkirk's Myra Perkins who set a national record of 56.83m when winning the under-18 hammer.

Scott Neyedli and Pamela Tosh set men's and women's course records when winning the top prizes in yesterday's Dyce half marathon. Neyedli won the in 1:15:58. Tosh won in 1:26:35.

Aberdeen AAC clinched victory in both the men’s and women’s east-section leagues when winning their matches at the Petrofac meeting at Caird Park, Dundee. The city men took the trophy by three league points from Arbroath and District AC with Perth Strathtay Harriers third. In the women’s table Aberdeen won by one point from Banchory Stonehaven AC with Arbroath third.
