The sell-out Tartan Heart Festival passed off peacefully and relatively safely with organisers hailing it as a great success and living up to its reputation as a family event.
However, there were two medical-related incidents at the festival at Belladrum, near Beauly, with a woman suffering a suspected heart attack at the campsite yesterday morning and a girl who had her shoulder dislocated when two pretend sumo wrestlers fell on top of her.
A Red Cross spokeswoman said the woman was treated by two of their volunteers who used a defibrillator to get her breathing again. She was airlifted by helicopter to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and is understood to be in a stable condition.
The sumo wrestling was a fun sideshow feature at the festival and involved children and adults wearing padded suits and wrestling each other on mats.
The spokeswoman added: “The two wrestlers became stuck together and rolled on to the girl, forcing her shoulder into the ground.
“She was taken to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, but later returned to the festival with her arm in a sling. It was just an unfortunate accident.”
The Red Cross said that around 120 people were treated for minor injuries by Saturday afternoon, with most suffering cuts and the effects of alcohol.
Festival director Joe Gibbs said: “I thought this was the nicest, most chilled and mellow family audience we have had yet.”
Northern Constabulary police officers used a quad bike to patrol the festival site for the first time. The force reported making five arrests on Friday and a further two on Saturday night. The arrests were for breaches of the peace and drink-driving offences. None of the seven arrests was in connection with drugs offences.
Event commander Chief Inspector Jim Neil praised the weekend revellers.
He said: “The general behaviour of the crowd was very good and people seemed intent on having a good time rather than cause trouble."
The 12,000 revellers who attended each day basked in the sunshine as they enjoyed a programme of music, comedy and literary performances. Headliners Editors and Ocean Colour Scene attracted huge crowds for their closing sets on Friday and Saturday night.
