CHARITY shops in Inverness have seen a drop in donations during the recession, an Oxfam boss said in a visit to the Highland capital yesterday.

David McCullough, who heads up Oxfam’s trading division, made a flying visit to the charity’s Lombard Street branch, where staff have reported a decline in donations this year.

He said: “The staff told me how tough it has been, particularly to get donations at the moment, and I think that’s likely to be caused by the recession.

“The triggers for donating are when people buy new clothes or do up their homes, but with the recession, they are holding back.”

Mr McCullough said that the Inverness branch also faced difficulties in recruiting enough volunteers to staff the store.

However, paying tribute to the staff who keep the branch running, he said: “I came to Inverness to thank them for all their hard work.”

Mr McCullough’s visit comes shortly after two Inverness volunteers were awarded long-service awards.
