PETERHEAD’S record-breaking cancer fundraisers had a celebrity guest round for tea yesterday as former MP Edwina Currie thanked them for their donations.
The author, who famously had an affair with former prime minister John Major, met with members of the 34 teams who took to the track at Peterhead’s Lord Catto Park for Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life event in July. The teams hoped to beat the £33,000 raised by the event in 2008, but £121,700 has been generated by the event, more than any other Relay for Life in the country.
Miss Currie said it was an honour to pour tea for them at a special meeting organised at the town’s Palace Hotel yesterday.
The fundraising total was originally believed to be almost £110,000, but an additional £18,500 was raised through the Donation Station fundraiser, where unwanted goods were donated to local Cancer Research UK shops.
The amount raised is the most by a Relay For Life in the UK, beating the previous £111,000 record set in Caithness last year.
Main organiser Angie Shearer, of Old Toll Road, Huntly, said the total was “incredible”.
