A MORAY church which had been closed for six months for a major refurbishment has reopened its doors to the public.
The category A-listed Bellie Parish Church in Fochabers was closed in March while the project, involving and largely funded by the local community, was carried out.
The congregation has been represented throughout the project, and a dedicated management team worked closely with the main contractors, Darroch and Allan.
The interior has been transformed with a complete redecoration, new electrical and heating systems and the replacement of pews with individual chairs.
There have also been environmental improvements to the 18th century Georgian church, built in 1797, such as additional insulation.
A new chancel area was formed by the interior being turned 180 degrees, focusing on the bicentenary stained glass windows.
Parish minister the Rev Alison Mehigan, who conducted a re-dedication service on Sunday, said: “This is now a 21st century interior of an 18th century building.
“Apart from its principal purpose of public worship, we hope the church building will be a focus for other cultural activities in Fochabers.”
Gordon Brown, the fundraising organiser, said: “The events which have raised the funds have also drawn the people of the congregation, village and surrounding areas together. It has been hard work, but at the same time we have had a lot of fun. Some of the activities have become so popular we are going to keep them going for a few years at least.”
There is to be an open house at the church on Sunday, from 4pm to 6pm, inviting the public to see the new-look church, followed by a Songs of Praise.
