Asians to take a shot at football

ASIAN Scots are being encouraged into professional football by an anti-racism campaign.
Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy promoted the idea after a charity match between politicians and former football players.
Mr Murphy said: “We need to do more to encourage young Asians to take up football. There are many more Asian Scots at football matches as supporters but not enough on the pitch as professional players.”
The challenge match yesterday marked the start of two weeks of anti-racism events involving 200 teams from the top flight to the junior leagues.
Former Scotland and Rangers striker Ally McCoist ran out at the Ibrox community complex in Glasgow with a team featuring ex-Celtic star Tom Boyd and former Dundee manager Jim Duffy.
Mr Murphy scored the winner in a penalty shoot-out. The final score was 7-6.
Organiser Billy Singh said: “Our fortnight of action is an opportunity for everyone to take a proactive stance against racism. I encourage people to get involved by initiating an event at a local level and to challenge all forms of prejudice and celebrate diversity.
Football is leading the way in trying to change people’s attitudes and behaviour within football grounds. Our challenge is to spread that message to our communities.”
Captain of the Scottish parliamentary side, MSP Ken Macintosh, said: “MSPs from all parties agree on the need to eradicate racism.
“Through the Scottish parliamentary football team we are delighted to help kick off a fortnight of action across the country.”
