New dawn for hero hostelry

THE Pennan Inn will forever be linked with the Burt Lancaster film Local Hero, which propelled the tiny shorefront hostelry to worldwide fame. The publicity should have ensured a steady stream of curious visitors for whoever owned the inn and a tourism boost which would be felt right along the Buchan and Banffshire coast.

In reality, it has struggled and the mudslides which devastated the village two years ago seemed to be the final nail in the pub’s coffin. Now, however, it has reopened under new owners, who will themselves be local heroes if they can restore prosperity to the Pennan Inn.
