Stitches on Skye to show the links that tie

THE Skye Bridge was decorated with pieces of knitting and crochet to celebrate Highland Homecoming yesterday.

Patchwork blankets and embellished panels, some of them depicting the lives of Scottish forebears, have been placed next to creations sent from around the world, including Australia, China, Europe and the US.

Fiona MacEwan, of Luib na Luban, a textile arts group which organised Stitches on the Bridge, said: “It’s been great to be part of a project which connects the remote west Highlands with the rest of the world, with knitters in their 80s and children as young as five taking part.”

The items will remain on the bridge until Monday.

An event will be held at Kyleakin Village Hall today, from 2pm-11pm, to celebrate the hanging.

Activities include informal knitting and crochet workshops, with the aim of creating giant links to form a knitted chain for the bridge.
