A man who died following an incident in the early hours of yesterday was a decorated war hero.

Paul McGee, 28, who served with the Scots Guards, was found at McConnell Road at Lochwinnoch, in Renfrewshire, at 1.25am.

He was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he died a short time later.

The soldier had been awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery in July 2008.

It was reported he risked his own life trying to save comrade Stephen Ferguson while on a tour of duty in Iraq.

Guardsman Ferguson, 31, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, who was originally from Lanarkshire, was in a Warrior armoured vehicle on a routine patrol near Basra city in December 2007 when it slid into a canal while manoeuvring in the dark.

Guardsman McGee and other soldiers freed him from the vehicle and gave first aid. He was flown back to the UK for medical treatment, but later died.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday into Guardsman McGee’s death.

Last night, his commanding officer paid tribute to the dead soldier, whom he described as “a superb guardsman and as brave as they come”.

Lieutenant Colonel Lincoln Jopp MC said: “The whole of the Scots Guards has been shocked by the tragic death of one of its heroes.

“The men of the 1st Battalion and the regimental family join me in sending our sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to Paul’s mother Anne, his sister Kelly and his family and friends in Lochwinnoch. We honour our fallen.”

It is understood Guardsman McGee had been working in Glasgow recruiting for the Scots Guards, a job for which he was said have displayed “real talent”.
