Waste Aware Bus hits the road for two-week tour of north-east

ABERDEENSHIRE Council’s award-winning Waste Aware Bus will be at Oldmeldrum today at the start of a two-week tour.

It will be at Meldrum Academy from 10am-noon, when staff will offer advice on ways to reduce and reuse waste and give information on the council’s recycling services.

Advice will include recipes and tips on cutting food waste in the home.

Figures have shown that Scottish families waste £430 to £550 a year by throwing away food that ends up on landfill sites.

Staff will also provide details of home-composting units that help reduce garden waste and are available from as little as £8 through a national scheme.

Members of the Grampian Real Nappy Project will be highlighting the financial and environmental benefits of using traditional nappies rather than disposables.

The council’s infrastructure services committee chairman, Peter Argyle, said: “The council has seen an annual rise in the amount of waste being diverted from landfill, which shows Aberdeenshire residents are keen to learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle.

“The Waste Aware Bus is a fantastic source of information on recycling.”

The tour will continue on Monday with stops at Bellfield car park at Banchory from 10am-11.30am and the Church Square car park at Ballater from 2-3.30pm.
