VOLUNTEERS behind Scotland’s only known club for people suffering painful leg problems have been commended for their community spirit.

The Speyside Leg Club beat competition from 27 others to win the volunteer award from the National Leg Club Foundation.

The club meets weekly to give patients an opportunity to discuss and seek treatment for conditions such as ulcers and varicose veins from Aberlour’s district nursing team.

Volunteers manage reception, paperwork, appointments and fundraising.

Recent campaigns paid for a computer for the patient database and a £5,000 device that assesses leg problems.

District nursing sister Ally Lister said the club would not have been possible without the volunteers.

She said: “The nursing service provides the care but it is the volunteers who provide all the administrative support. And they are a great support to each other, that is the whole ethos behind it.”

Club chairman Norman Anderson, of Church Street, Dufftown, said he was proud to be part of the group, which he helped to set up in 2005.

He said: “This is a way of getting people with these troubles together. You can attend a hospital but it’s far easier going to the leg club and being with other folk who have got the same problems.”

The Speyside Leg Club has 228 members and meets between 1.30-3.30pm on Tuesdays at the Aberlour Masonic Hall.
