Ellon find their ruthless streak against Borderers

ELLON kept themselves in the race for promotion with a convincing seven-try rout of Berwick in a 46-17 National League Division 1 victory.
Under-pressure Berwick had done well to contain the Aberdeenshire side to a half-time 13-10 lead.
“The first half was a little sluggish, but the players took on board the comments we made at the break and were quite ruthless in the second period,” said head coach Clint Parsons.
The Ellon coach had tried veteran James Young at stand off in the first half, but reverted to his first pick Mark Ryan for the second period.
Ryan’s response was to score two tries in double-quick time while adding four conversions to his tally for the club.
Ellon swept into an early two-try lead through number eight Eddie Theron and Nicki Fraser, only to sit back and enable the Borders side to claw its way back with a Colin Young try, which Michael McCreath converted.
Young and McCreath swapped penalties before the break after which The Meadows men finally got their act together, running in tries from Ryan (2), winger Ben Hickie, flanker Glenn Douglas and brother and full back Neil.
Berwick had one of their own as Young scored his second of the day to which McCreath added the conversion.
However it was Ellon’s day, keeping them in third place in the league.
