thieves took cash for war veterans

COLLECTION boxes raising money for war veterans and their families have been stolen from a Dundee church.

Thieves took three remembrance day collection tins for the Poppy Fund from St Mary’s Church at Broughty Ferry on Monday.

The boxes, stolen with a black metal charity box, were taken from the building on Queen Street some time between 11am and 5pm.

Broughty Ferry councillor Laurie Bidwell, who is a member of the congregation, said he was “appalled” by the theft.

“It’s appalling that somebody would take money like that – especially at a time like this when there has been a lot of attention on recent events when local service people have died or been seriously injured.”

It is thought the stolen boxes contained less than £100.

Mr Bidwell added: “It is particularly alarming because as a church we have had a tradition of keeping our church open.

“So many churches now are locked up, perhaps for this kind of reason.”

Police are urging anyone with information to phone 0300 111 2222 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
