The five teenage members of Engraved beat competition from five other groups to win top prize of £1,000.

The youngsters, who all attend Turriff Academy, locked musical horns with bands from Inverness, Dundee and the north-east, in the competition finals on Sunday at the Lemon Tree, Aberdeen.

The contest was organised by the Jesus House evangelical and pentecostal church in Aberdeen, with support from city music shop Bruce Millers.

Engraved drummer Andy Robison, 15, of Church Street, Turriff, said: “We had to perform three songs of our own with lyrics relating to the scriptures in the Bible.

“We stayed true to our heavy-metal style and we’re delighted to have won.

“We want to use the prize money to help pay for future recording.”

Event co-ordinator Elomobo Izzi said the Turriff boys were worthy winners.

“Their performances were judged on various criteria such as vocals, instrumentation and audience appeal.

“All the finalists were excellent and we now want to make the contest Scotland-wide next year.”

The Turriff band was formed about a year ago. The other members are Jim Chippington, 15, Daniel Clark, 16, Glenn McIntosh, 15 and Kevin Arnold, 16.
