SCOTLAND’S defending champion David Murdoch will be in at the deep end when the action starts at the European championships at Aberdeen’s Linx Arena on Saturday, December 5.

Both of the Scots’ opening day round-robin matches are against squads which will also be using the Europeans as a dress-rehearsal for the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in February.

Scotland open against Sweden in a morning game before coming back onto the ice on Saturday evening to face France. On Sunday they face the Czech Republic and Finland.

Other Olympic squads Murdoch and his men will face are Denmark, who they meet in their only game on Monday, Germany and Switzerland, and, in a re-run of last year’s final, Norway.

The Scottish women, led by 19-year-old Eve Muirhead and including Aberdeenshire’s own former world champion Jackie Lockhart, have an easier start, going in against Italy and England on the opening day.

Their prospective Olympic opponents include Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Olympic champions Sweden.

More than 50 teams from 30 nations will be playing in what is the biggest championship event on the international curling calendar.

The leading 10 men’s and women’s teams will compete at the Linx Arena, while the Curl Aberdeen facility will be the venue for the men’s and women’s teams in the B divisions.
