Injury and a lack of opportunity have restricted Scott Boyd to just eight first-team starts for Ross County this season.

The 23-year-old suffered from shin splints before the campaign began and then found himself out of the Victoria Park side starting 11 due to the good form of a central defensive partnership formed by Alex Keddie and Steven Watt.

A suspension to Watt meant Boyd was handed a starting berth against Caley Thistle in County’s Highland derby victory last weekend.

He justified his selection by scoring the first goal of the game and keeping the Inverness attack quiet until Adam Rooney’s late goal for the visitors.

The former Livingston and Partick Thistle player admits he has been powerless to force his case for regular inclusion, but hopes he did enough to play against Ayr at Somerset Park this afternoon.

He said: “It was a bit frustrating at the start of the season, I got injured and when I was fit again the team was doing well and I just had to wait for my chance to get back into the team.

“I had shin splints through pre-season and it took me a while to get rid of them, I am fine now.

“Alex Keddie and Steven Watt have been playing regularly this season and they have been doing really well.

“Steven is suspended for a couple of games and now that I am back in the team I am hoping to stay there.”

Boyd was never worried that he would spend a prolonged period on the substitutes’ bench.

He added: “We have quite a small squad so everybody is going to be used throughout the season. I knew that at the start of the campaign, as did a lot of the players and once you get your chance you have to take it.

“The players have been playing so well it has been difficult to get into the team.

“We are doing well as we have a tight-knit squad and we all work hard for each other — hopefully we can continue the good run we are on.

“Ayr is a hard place to go and we know we need to put in a good performance to get a result.

“Even though we are higher in the league than them it doesn’t matter at all, most teams in the First Division are capable of beating each other.”
