WORK on a long-awaited Aberdeenshire skatepark is due to begin on Monday.
Councillors passed plans in September for the facility at Stonehaven which will be built at Queen Elizabeth Park
Gravity Engineering will undertake the work at a cost of £105,000, which was raised by the Stonehaven skatepark committee over several years.
The park will feature elements of a bowl, quarter-pipes, a rail and a tombstone.
Chairwoman Janet Ralston, of Wardie Road, Edinburgh, formerly of Stonehaven, said: “We’re ecstatic. It is going to be a good-quality skate park and the kids will really enjoy it. It’s suitable for all abilities.
“It will have a bowl on it as phase two is being built at the same time.
“We’re delighted, the kids have worked hard for many, many years and we are really grateful for all the support from the public and bushiness over the years. The support has kept us going all these years and kept us motivated.”
She added that the park was suitable for BMX and rollerblades as well as skateboards.
An opening day will be held next year and organisers hope to attract professional skaters to give demos.
