THE lord lieutenant of Moray said yesterday that a relief fund for flood victims should be doubled — to help everyone in need.

Lt Col Grenville Johnston said £26,000 had been raised since the fund was launched to help residents and businesses who had properties damaged by the floods on September 4.

Elgin, Fochabers and Rothes were the worst affected, after a month’s rain fell in 24 hours, causing rivers to burst their banks.

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated, and some are still living in temporary accommodation.

Although the floodwater receded as quickly as it appeared, there was massive damage done to homes and businesses across Moray.

Within days, donations from well-wishers came pouring in and, added to unspent funds from previous appeals, the total is almost £50,000.

But Lt Col Johnston, who is chairman of the trustees of the Moray Flood Relief Fund, said the committee needed between £80,000 and £100,000 to support displaced people, including those affected by smaller floods since September 4.

“It is heartening to know that so many people are so caring of those who have suffered in the floods at this time,” he said.

“So far, 49 applications have been made to the fund and each applicant will receive a visit.

“We have already approved more than £6,000 of requests for assistance to try to meet immediate needs.

“I hope everyone will understand that we have a duty to ensure that the generously-donated funds are carefully directed to support proper claims.

“We have been particularly grateful to those who have given us an exact list of their requirements, with as near an accurate costing as possible.”

He said the trustees were grateful to people and businesses all over the country who had given a donation.

Cheques, payable to the Moray Flood Relief Fund, can be sent to Lt Col Grenville Johnston, c/o Moray Council, High Street, Elgin, IV30 1BX.
