Munro medal aim – but this time from onfield

Caley Thistle captain Grant Munro already has one Challenge Cup winner’s medal and he wants to earn his second at Perth tomorrow.

However, the 29-year-old was an unused substitute when Inverness defeated Airdrie in the final in October 2003.

But the central defender is sure to feature prominently this time as Caley Jags take on big-spending Dundee at McDiarmid Park.

Inverness expect more than 2,000 supporters to make the journey to the final and Munro does not want to disappoint the travelling fans.

He said: “If selected, it will be my first involvement in a cup final.

“It was disappointing not to get on when we played Airdrie, even for just a couple of minutes.

“You don’t feel as much a part of it as the other players on the park.

“It was a great occasion that day and, hopefully, we can repeat it on Sunday.

“It will be a very difficult task as Dundee are joint top of the First Division.

“You don’t get many opportunities to win a cup final.

“People might not think it is a big cup final. It is the cup for the best of the rest outside the SPL.

“But both sets of fans have responded and that shows it is a big game for us and I am sure it is for Dundee as well.

“It is a fair distance to travel and, hopefully, we can send the fans home happy after the game.”

Munro anticipates a busy afternoon facing a dangerous Dundee front line.

But he also believes that Caley Jags have the firepower to trouble Jocky Scott’s side.

He added: “Both teams have a lot of attacking ability in their side and it should make for a high-scoring game if you look at it on paper.

“It is going to be a difficult day for all the defenders on show.

“It should make for a very entertaining game.

“We want to try to use it as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“It would be good to get one over on our rivals in the league – but they are probably thinking the same thing.”

In the build-up to the final, Munro and manager Terry Butcher yesterday received the keys to a new minibus, supplied by Macrae and Dick, which Inverness will use to transport the first team to training at Fort George.
