ACADEMICS and students from all over the world have been sampling the best the north-east has to offer courtesy of Aberdeen Business School’s International Week.

The week aimed to highlight and celebrate the rich diversity of culture enjoyed at ABS at The Robert Gordon University.

It started on a high note when ABS, Oklahoma State University and Turka University of Applied Science, Finland, formally signed the HOTEL Atlantis project.

The HOTEL (Higher Opportunities for Training Education and Languages) project sets out to establish a joint study programme and will fund a total of 16 students who will move between the three partner institutions each year for three years. The concept aims to develop transatlantic hotel managers.

During the week, packed with a range of social and academic events, guest lectures were available to all staff and students, giving them a snapshot of what is taught in other international partner universities, and also what it is like to study and learn abroad.

Throughout the week, ABS provided a range of events to get students involved, including the Celebration of Culture and Fashion Show, the International Ceilidh and the International Opportunities Fair – where study abroad, international placement programmes and student exchanges were the focus, detailing the breadth of opportunities available.

Academic staff and students from 11 countries (including Germany, the US, Switzerland, Finland, France, Denmark, Spain, The Netherlands and Romania) participated in the week.

The largest contingent was from Holland, with 25 members of staff and 18 students taking part in the Dutch forum. ABS receives many students from all over The Netherlands, in part because of good air connections to Amsterdam and Groningen, and also because of links to the oil industry.

Veronica Strachan, business manager at ABS, said: “Aberdeen Business School is committed to ensuring that our students, whether local or international, experience an international education while studying with us.

“International Week is an important part of that strategy as it allows an international experience and a cultural exchange on a number of levels.

“International Week is about enhancing the international educational experience offered. A number of our visiting academics delivered lectures to our students and others participated in tutorial classes led by ABS academics.

“Undergraduate students interested in foreign exchange as part of their study had the opportunity to meet representatives from our exchange partners, mainly from Europe, but including the US, to find out more about the exchanges offered.”
