Elaine C Smith casts spell as Fairy Mary

Cinderella opens at HM theatre

THE festive season officially got under way at HM Theatre on Saturday night when the magical panto Cinderella opened.

Elaine C Smith, starring as godmother Fairy Mary, quickly cast her spell on the Aberdeen audience, playing it strictly for laughs.

Her performance, along with that of ugly sisters, Roxy and Foxy (Alan McHugh and Jordan Young), helped make this show one of the funniest at HMT for years.

Presented by Qdos Pantomimes, the production brings to life the beloved tale of young Cinders, played sweetly by Sophie Boyne, who finds her Prince Charming, played by Callum Nicol.

Fast-paced action, beautiful sets and dozens of local references – including an honorary mention for Donald Trump’s hair – kept the audience cheering throughout.

Praise too goes to the team responsible for the 3D special effects, which create a memorable rollercoaster ride, and give the impression that frogs and scary spiders are coming straight out into the auditorium.

With funny versions of chart hits, bang up-to-date references to Susan Boyle and Jedward, and costume changes a-plenty, this show ticked all the boxes for those looking for a fun family night out.

Miss it and miss out on an original Christmas cracker.
