Pupils step out in Strictly-style dance contest

More than 300 north-east pupils will be taking to the dance floor this week in a schools’ version of television show Strictly Come Dancing.
The primary four to primary seven youngsters from the Alford and Kemnay areas have been perfecting the waltz and cha-cha-cha through ballroom dancing lessons organised as part of an Aberdeenshire Council’s Active Schools initiative.
Today a schools’ Strictly Come Dancing-style dance-off will be held at the Thainstone House Hotel at Inverurie, with a final competition day being held tomorrow at Westhill’s Holiday Inn.
Councillor Richard Stroud, council education, learning and leisure committee chairman, said the Active Schools programme provided ways for pupils to keep fit and have fun.
He said: “As well as focusing on fitness, the sessions have helped children learn about dance etiquette, history, geography and music – all while developing co-ordination skills.
“These two events will give the children the opportunity to display their new skills and take part in a Strictly-style dance contest.”
The pupils have been learning dance steps over the past six weeks. Dance classes will now be offered as part of after-school programmes.
Taking to the dance floor today will be youngsters from Cluny, Echt, Dunecht, Keig, Lumsden and Tough Schools. Tomorrow’s competitors will come from Kintore, Kemnay, Alehousewells, Kinellar and Alford primaries.
