Cup of woe as Culter and Hillhead exit

Published: 07/12/2009

NORTH-EAST interest in the Scottish Junior Cup ended with Culter and Hillhead both bowing out in Saturday’s third-round action.

At Bathgate, the Crombie Park side’s Alan Smith was red-carded after just half an hour as the Aberdeen side went down 4-1. Alex Lurinsky (2), Jim Lister and Brian McColligan found the net for Thistle with Chris Mountford notching Culter’s consolation.

Irvine Meadow went nap at Hillhead with Richie Barr scoring twice.

In the Superleague, a 10th win of the campaign means Sunnybank retain their 100% league record with doubles from Jim Fettes and Nicky Gordon doing the damage in the 4-1 victory against Buchanhaven Hearts.

Stuart Sim gave Hermes the interval advantage in the match with East End at New Advocates Park. The same player then doubled the visitors lead before a fightback as End levelled matters through a Ryan Smith penalty and Mike Taylor.

Grant Campbell and Keith Wilson then struck to give Hermes a 4-2 win.

At Spain Park, Banks o’ Dee’s Kevin White gave his side a great start against Stoneywood when he shot home after a Gary McNamee shot could only be parried. White again and two Graeme Long headers put Dee 4-1 up at the break with Richie Whyte scoring after the break in the 5-3 success.

Banchory St Ternan and Hall Russell United shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Lewis Shand and Scott Garrett on target for Saints and Matthew Whitfield and Calum Innes responding.

Ellon United went nap at Longside. A Scott Henry penalty gave United a great start before Keith Reid and Cammy Bruce put the visitors further in front before the home side’s cause was not helped by the sending off of Muir Murray three minutes before the interval. Michael Thompson reduced the deficit but Ryan Petrie and Matty Edmond made it five for Ellon, with Longside’s Ban Danton completing the scoring.

At Aberdeen Sports Village, Maud won 4-1 against Lewis United. In the First Division, promotion seeking pair Glentanar and Stonehaven drew 2-2 at Woodside. Cruden Bay ran out 4-2 Second Division victors at RAF Lossiemouth.
