New ale is a seasonal treat
Deeside Brewery says drink is ‘like Dundee cake in a glass’

AN ABERDEENSHIRE brewery is celebrating its successful first year with a special seasonal ale.
Deeside Brewery has gone from strength to strength since it opened near Aboyne almost a year ago.
In celebration of its first birthday, the small brewery has produced a winter ale, made from a recipe which is more than 100 years old.
Called Alban Arthan – a Celtic translation for Winter Solstice – it is darker than traditional beers.
Brewer Rob James said: “It’s the style of ale we would drink at this time of year. Darker, stronger and sweeter. It’s like Dundee cake in a glass.
“Traditionally it is what you would consider a winter ale. I’m sure it will be a hugely popular ale which will add to our ever-growing range of local beers.”
If the limited-edition ale proves a success, it will be added to the firm’s regular ales, said Mr James.
The beer-maker launched his first venture, a micro-brewery, from his home more than three years ago, producing about 200 pints a week.
In January, he relocated to the Deeside Activity Park at Dess, near Aboyne, changing the venture’s name to Deeside Brewery, and was able to produce up to 30 times more drink.
Deeside Activity Park owner Ken Howie said: “It’s great to collaborate with the brewery on events such as this.”
Produce from the Deeside Brewery is being sold across the region and the name is becoming increasingly well-known in the north-east.
