THE AMERICAN Dream is close to becoming a reality for north-east footballer Marc Bowron after trading his coaching position for an on-the-field role.

The 23-year-old former Montrose youth player is attracting attention from several Major League Soccer sides, including Colorado Rapids, after impressing in the college leagues and for semi-professional outfit St Louis Lions.

The engineer, from Marykirk, near Laurencekirk, headed Stateside in 2006, originally to work as a coach.

His talent on the pitch stood out however, and he was picked up by scouts and offered a scholarship by Missouri’s Belhaven College.

The attacking midfielder, who combined playing with his geology studies, made a move to nearby St Louis Meramec College and captained the side to their first regional championship.

He is now set for the step up to the professional ranks after trials with several clubs including the Rapids.

Father Brian Bowron said: “He had intentions of furthering his education when he went over there but wanted to get his coaching tickets.

“I'm very proud of him for doing it on his own and going out there on his own. He’s done everything off his own back. He loves football. I think he probably got that from my grandad – he was a good footballer.

“He’s a quiet, unassuming lad but I think he’s well liked and he’s doing really well at college.”
