THREE RAF Kinloss men are hoping to be ahead of the pack at a sled dog rally in the Highlands next weekend.

The Arden Grange and Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled Dog Rally attracts dozens of mushers from across the UK each year.

Servicemen Robbie Mclennan, who works on a maintenance squadron, Tim Sugars, who works with the mountain rescue team, and Graham Robinson, who works for Cobham, a subcontractor for British Aerospace, are hoping to return with silverware from the event.

Elgin-born engineer Mr Mclennan, 36, said: “This is my first season competing, and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve kept huskies since 2005, and this seemed like the natural progression.

“The plan at the moment is to race a three-wheeled rig pulled by two dogs. However, if the wintry conditions continue there is a chance that sleds will be needed for the race.”

About 200 teams are expected to compete in the event, which is the highlight of the sled dog season, with some travelling from as far afield as Devon.

Sled dog rallying is the fastest-growing winter sport in Europe.
