Growing north-east haulage firm on the move
Jobs to follow Colin Lawson’s expansion at new Granite City base

ABERDEEN firm Colin Lawson Transport has grown from a one-man band since Mr Lawson founded the firm with just one lorry in 1997 to a substantial operator with a 40-strong fleet and 46 staff and more jobs on the way.
It will expand further this year by moving from Howes Road, at Bucksburn to Hareness Circle, Altens, where it will have a one-acre site – about four times the size of its existing location – with offices, workshop and a yard.
In addition, Aberdeen-born Mr Lawson, 42, has plans to diversify into crane hire this year.
He says he has the full support of his bankers and is about to look at cranes.
The move to Hareness Circle is expected to take place at the end of the month and the overall growth plans will mean more jobs, although it is too early to say how many.
Mr Lawson said: “Despite the recession last year we’ve done well. In 2009, we added 10 vehicles to the fleet and 12 staff to the payroll.
“Last year, our turnover was £3.3million, up £1million on the year before, which is very good for haulage and storage. We plan to continue expanding cautiously.
“We are mainly committed to the oil and gas sector but are also involved in general haulage. We are also committed to training and have invested a lot of money in training.”
Colin Lawson Transport is very much a family firm, with wife Lisa the company secretary and brother Graeme also employed in the enterprise. Mr Lawson was always involved in transport, as both driver and administrator, before founding his own business.
