Right move for all, including Terry

WE LIVE in an age of corporate sponsorship and the English FA, regardless of what Fabio Capello thought, will be delighted with the England manager’s decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy of the national team.
As we have seen with world number one golfer Tiger Woods losing major sponsors due to problems in his private life, major organisations do not want to be tarnished with the same brush and some would have felt guilty by association in supporting England while Terry was the figurehead.
The FA will feel it was the only decision which could be made, but I hope the Chelsea defender looks back and realises it was the best decision for him, too.
Make no mistake, England need the Chelsea captain to be at his best if they are to have any chance of winning the World Cup. This decision will give the player the chance to draw breath, get his head down and focus on playing his football again.
As a manager, I am faced with corporate issues when making decisions and I have to look at what is best for the player and the squad.
Capello will know he has upset his player by taking this decision but I expect him to privately offer support to Terry.
Terry is his man after all. He is the guy Capello wants by his side at press conferences and the man he has publicly declared he can rely on to implement his instructions on the field of play.
The decision has been made and England will go forward untroubled by the events of the last two weeks with their now former captain.
If they do not win the World Cup this summer it will not be because of Terry, who I expect to have an outstanding tournament.
He will still organise the back four and will still provide an attacking threat. If England do not win, it will because players of the ability of Wayne Rooney are not fully fit.
