Students’ art exhibition is a class act

ART students in Aberdeen launched the most important exhibition of their careers so far last night.

Final-year painting undergraduates at the Robert Gordon University’s Gray’s School of Art opened their pre-degree show exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts in Castlegate. Stills from music videos, the London Underground network, derelict buildings and wildlife are among the themes explored by the 25 classmates.

The show is called Gray Area, highlighting the students’ connection to the school and the still-experimental nature of their work, and features a diverse collection of subjects and style.

The students hope the experience will help them prepare for their degree show in June. As well as researching and painting each piece, the members of the group have also been responsible for organising and promoting the display. Sophie Ormerod, of Kemnay Place, Aberdeen, created a canvas collage for her piece and has been involved in co-ordinating the event.

The 21-year-old said: “This is our first opportunity to exhibit as a class and it is brilliant to see how our work looks hanging together in a gallery setting.”

Kylie Roux, marketing manager at Peacock Visual Arts, said: “Peacock has a longstanding relationship with Gray's, with our founding members being graduates of the art school. The students have a real buzz about them, so it's great to be able to engage with them in preparation for their upcoming degree show.”

The exhibition will run until March 3.
