Glamorous Gael launches album

Young singer goes down well with Glasgow audience

ARGYLL’S own glamorous Gael Joy Dunlop launched her debut album to an appreciative audience in Glasgow on Saturday night.

The striking 6ft 1in tall 26-year-old, who divides her time between her family home at Connel, near Oban, and Glasgow, sings traditional Gaelic songs using new arrangements on Dùsgadh (Awakening).

Launching her album with a live performance at February’s Ceol’s Craic event at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Miss Dunlop went down a storm.

She said: “It was lovely – we got a really good crowd.

“It is nice when it’s well received. We did put a lot of work into creating the album. That was our first time performing it live, which was scary but exciting. Now we can go out and do a bit more on it.”

The album, co-produced with Barry Reid (of Celtic bands Treacherous Orchestra and Croft No 5) is being released on Miss Dunlop’s own record label, Sradag Music.

The tracks on the album reflect her experience, passion and inspiration as a young Gaelic singer living and working in the west coast of Scotland.

The “girl next door” combines her many years of exposure to Scotland's rich Gaelic heritage with a young, trendy image. With talents ranging from singing to television presenting, dancing to Gaelic journalism, Miss Dunlop certainly has more strings to her bow than most. She combines Gaelic development work with media stints and is also a former Inter-Celtic Dance Champion.
