Jefferies backs calls for expanded SPL and urges change in red-card reviews

HEARTS manager Jim Jefferies has backed calls for an expanded SPL and urged a change to the red-card review system after Laryea Kingston’s appeal failed.
The Tynecastle manager was adamant Kingston’s dismissal in the 1-0 win at Aberdeen on Saturday was nothing more than accidental, insisting the Ghana internationalist’s rustiness after a lay-off through injury contributed to the foul.
Jefferies claimed had Kingston been match-sharp, it could have been him and not opponent Fraser Fyvie who came off worst in the challenge.
With the club’s appeal being dismissed after match official Willie Collum declared himself content that Kingston’s tackle should be classed serious foul play, Jefferies is clear changes must be made to ensure an independent panel makes a decision on the fairness of any controversial ruling.
He said: “I’ve looked at it on the video a number of times and it shows clearly Fraser Fyvie’s foot is higher.
“I think it should go to an independent panel.”
Jefferies, who has selection worries for Sunday’s trip to face Dundee United, is also keen to see the debate over the make-up of the SPL lead to change.
He has long argued for an expanded top-flight, including the likes of Dunfermline, Dundee and Partick Thistle, and is convinced the system of sides playing each other four times a season is stale.
