The 33rd Grampian Industrialist of the Year was named last night as Calum Melville, chief executive of Cosalt Offshore.

Mr Melville’s success was announced at the awards dinner in the Ardoe House Hotel, near Aberdeen, attended by about 250 people.

The Aberdonian said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised as a Grampian Industrialist and to join a roll call that includes the likes of Sir Ian Wood, Bob Keiller and my immediate predecessor, George Yule.

“The last 18 months have been extremely challenging for industry as a whole, but have left us in a stronger position than ever to react to opportunities and increase market share.

“It is important to me to invest in the north-east, both in terms of Cosalt Offshore and my real-estate business, and that will continue to be the case.

“I have always believed in the importance of having the best people around me and winning this award is a tribute to their enthusiasm and professionalism.

“This would also never have happened without my brother, Stuart, who has been with me in my business ventures every step of the way.”

The award is managed by Junior Chamber International Aberdeen and project manager Lesley Mennie said: “We had a great response for nominations this year and it was an honour to announce the 2010 winner who will undoubtedly continue the tradition of excellence associated with the Grampian Industrialist Award.”

Mr Melville, 41, began his career in the oil and gas industry aged just 21 when he helped to form Grampian Test and Certification, which subsequently changed its name to gtc before it was acquired by the Cosalt group and became Cosalt Offshore.

Cosalt Offshore is a provider of lifting, tooling and marine services to the oil and gas industry, employing 300 in Aberdeen and 110 at operations in Stavanger and Lowestoft.

Mr Melville is targeting more international expansion, initially in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, the Middle East and Singapore, through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions.

Outwith Cosalt Offshore, his real-estate business has a multimillion-pound portfolio throughout the UK.

Another one of Mr Melville’s passions is football and last year he became a director of Dundee FC.

He is also committed to charities, particularly cancer charities and those helping terminally-ill children.

He is training for the Chicago Marathon in October with the aim of raising £50,000 for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.
